  • Location

    • Belém (the Portuguese word for Bethlehem) has long been at the center of important cultural highlights. To the west of Lisbon, the district’s ancient harbor has seen famous Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages during the period of the discoveries. Belém flourished as treasures, especially spices, poured back into Portugal. The area’s historical attractions include the white monolithic Monument of the Discoveries and the late-Gothic architecture of the Jerónimos Monastery. At some point even the royal family built a summer home (read: palace) here, and thanks to it, the area is dotted with beautiful parks. Nowadays it’s also a magnate for museum-goers.
