Under the Open Sky Exhibition

April 28 to May 1, 2022

Words by Vidula KotianDate 14 April 2022

Art is intrinsically political. While some artists such as Ukrainian creatives Masha Reva and Ivan Grabko might question the role of art during a war, Reva firmly believes that “as an artist, it is my responsibility to live through this experience and help other people to not lose their ability to feel.

Because after every trauma, there is healing, and I believe that art is helping to heal wounded souls.” As part of Under The Open Sky—an ongoing series of events organized to support humanitarian organizations and civilian initiatives currently active in Ukraine—Reva and Grabko will be showcasing their works to raise funds in Berlin at Ngoro Ngoro from April 28 to May 1, 2022.

The pair previewed their works on April 12, 2022 at A Dinner for Ukraine, a fundraising soiree at Wilmina’s Lovis Restaurant, hosted by Kristina Skripka and Vasily Grogol of Kyiv’s Bursa Hotel and Wilmina in partnership with Design Hotels.

“It’s hard to imagine a world without the rhythm of emotions we feel when we’re on the go.”

Reva—a multidisciplinary artist who has worked in different mediums including art direction, set, textile and fashion design—first caught our attention with a scene-setting piece for Bursa Hotel. She describes the series of artworks created for this exhibition as a diary of imagery representing the pain of war but also the power of seasons where spring comes no matter what. “Now when I look back, I see that I can divide all my works into different impressions from the news,” she says of her process.

“In general, all these artworks are a reflection on what we’re all going through but also an observation of myself, and how I still believe in the power of life over death.”

Talented young artist, Grabko’s paintings and drawings are already part of private collections in Europe and the U.S. His creative oeuvre encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. For the exhibition, he has created a series of paintings by daylight from an old shoe factory that he gradually converted into a studio. Grabko says of the series, “The instantaneous invasion of the war into peaceful life (in the work Kids!), gradually revealing the details of events (in the work God, What a Wonderful Garden), stopping and focusing on individual details (in the drawings A Man Eats a Bun and A Girl Playing with a Cat…).”

If you’re in the city, the exhibition is at Ngoro Ngoro, Lehderstraße 34, 13086 Berlin on 28 April from 17.00 for the official opening and from 29 April to 1 May, 2022 from 12.00 to 20.00.
