A Modernist Landmark Is Reborn in Stockholm

Design

Date 20 January 2019

Anyone visiting the Swedish capital in the coming months will be happy to know about a highly anticipated upcoming opening by the company that brought you Nobis Hotel Stockholm, Miss Clara by Nobis, and other beloved mainstays of Nordic hospitality.

Alessandro Catennacci, the Stockholm-based Italian hospitality magnate whose company, Nobis Hospitality Group, helped transform the Scandinavian hospitality scene, has another historic beauty in the works. Opening in spring of 2019 in Stockholm’s up-and-coming Hagastaden neighborhood, Blique by Nobis will inhabit a 1931 building that once served as a warehouse for the company Philips and was designed by seminal Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz, creator of Functionalist masterworks like the Malmö Opera House and the Church of St. Peter in Klippan.

Another modern master, Swedish star architect Gert Wingårdh, is tasked with turning the former warehouse building into a 249-room contemporary urban hotel, featuring airy social areas, two restaurants, bars, versatile meeting rooms and event spaces, a rooftop terrace with a fantastic view, and a large-scale courtyard bursting with plant life that will function as a green urban hideaway.

Wingårdh’s self-described “high organic” architectural style is on view in projects like the Swedish embassies in Washington and Berlin, as well as Nobis Hotel Copenhagen, which opened at the end of 2017—and now, Blique by Nobis.

Situated at the meeting point of Hagastaden, one of Stockholm’s largest and most important urban development areas, and Vasastan, home to the city’s gallery district, Blique by Nobis will serve as a perfect launch pad for visitors who want to explore the city’s verdant creative scene and sample the many gastronomic restaurants, innovative bars, cutting-edge boutiques, and other cultural riches the city has to offer.
