Why book with us?
Located in Costa Vicentina Natural Park at Europe's southwestern-most point, Portugal's Sagres peninsula boasts both a rich history and stunning natural beauty. Amid this wild and pure landscape lies the Memmo Baleeira. The brainchild of Portuguese hotelier and surfer Rodrigo Machaz has 144 rooms, each with views over either leafy gardens or glittering Atlantic waters. The hotel's minimal and stripped-back aesthetic adapts to the natural landscape. Rooms are furnished simply and elegantly in a monochrome palate. Decorative details are avoided and instead the blues from the ocean seep in through the panoramic windows to color the room. With a restaurant serving local produce, a bar, a café, and swimming pool set against the backdrop of Martinhal Bay, guests will have everything they need. But Machaz encourages visitors to mix with the locals, taste the flavors of the region, and make the most of the surrounding nature.
Rooms & Suites
The 144 rooms and suites offer fresh white facades that fit in perfectly with this seaside retreat’s location in the Algarve. The rooms offer sea, partial sea, and countryside views, while glass-enclosed bathrooms accentuate the Algarve’s stunning scenery. The minibar offers local goodies such as Sagres beers. The one-bedroom Memmo suites have an area of 50 square meters or 538 square feet, and a large living room and a kitchenette. The two-bedroom Memmo Suite (90 square meters or 968 square feet) comes with a double and twin beds and kitchenette.
Recapturing the Past
Originally opening its doors in 1962, and at the time known as Hotel da Baleeria, the property had once been a shining star in the area. Though its spectacular sea views helped make it a popular spot, it gradually lost its appeal. In short, it had the setting and good bones that made it ripe for rebirth. All it needed was a creative spirit to step in and take charge. Enter Rodrigo Machaz. “We tried to keep as many memories alive from the original hotel as possible,” he says of the full renovation he undertook on the property in 2006/2007, “like the chairs in the restaurant and even part of the hotel’s name. We took photos before we began, which one can see exhibited in the hotel.” Today, the completely updated, stunning, 144-room, 4-star property invokes the ocean in every room.
Though luxury abounds (think: Egyptian linen) there’s little to distract one from what’s clearly the main point—not the hotel’s interior, but its exterior: The ocean commands center stage. ‘We wanted you to feel you have the ocean right in front of you,’ says Machaz. ‘It’s not about forcibly invoking minimalism, but about focusing on what is beautiful.’
Made by Originals
Rodrigo Machaz is as comfortable with his surfboard tucked under his arm as he is walking the corridors of his two hotels, Memmo Alfama, in Lisbon, or Memmo Baleeira, situated in Sagres on the southernmost tip of Portugal. His hotel staff is family—local ambassadors for the region—and his guests are friends.
