Nestled between the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Lo Sereno Casa de Playa is a laidback property that lives up to its name. Here, serenity reigns supreme and nothing detracts from the hotel’s main spotlight: a three-mile-long unspoiled beach bordered by coconut palms in Troncones, a world-class surfing destination in Mexico. The earth-tone building is two-stories—following an unwritten rule by locals that development in this once-sleepy fishing village should be low impact—and exudes the spirit of a private beach home. The 10 intimate rooms face the ocean or an infinity pool and feature the ultimate in barefoot luxury—private bathroom patios and large terraces. The hotel’s kitchen offers gourmet Mexican fare, sourcing fresh local ingredients daily. Whether dining at the Lo Sereno hotel restaurant or elsewhere along the beach, the atmosphere is relaxed and the food deliciously wholesome. Troncones’ drowsy authenticity attracts intrepid travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path ocean-side bliss.

The 10 guestrooms stand at a generous 38 or 43 square meters, and all feature a terrace with sliding wooden doors, a bathroom with a rain shower and a “bathroom patio,” and a working desk with a chair. While the 38-square-meter Room A offers a king-size bed and a view of the pool, the 43-square-meter Room B boasts two queen-size beds and ocean views.
When Rafael Sainz Skewes arrived on his motorbike to the shores of Troncones 16 years ago, the golden beaches nestled between the mountains and the ocean captured his heart instantly. It was a connection that has had him returning to Troncones ever since and finally, to owning a little piece of this paradise. For Skewes, Lo Sereno is a vision of what a beach hotel should be. His inspiration he says comes from his taste for enjoyable gatherings around good food and inspiring company: “It’s a place for us to stop for a moment to meet, to love, to share the simple joys of life.” The avid adventure enthusiast is as happy under the depths of the ocean as he is on top of the highest summits. It’s no wonder he couldn’t imagine sitting in an office for the rest of his life and why Troncones, with its magical mix of the best of both worlds, is where he’s happiest.

Just a short drive from Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Troncones has the charm of a sleepy fishing village but the strappings of a bigger cosmopolitan area. Hammocks sway under palm trees, the people on the beach are still a modest number, but the surfing and underwater activities are world class and the gourmet dining scene is diverse.
