Even as the snowflakes start to fall, adding soft powder to the slopes outside, Kimamaya Boutique Hotel remains toasty-warm. Kimamaya is the Japanese word for “be yourself” and here, you can do just that. Kimamaya Boutique Hotel, a nine-room mountain lodge in Niseko, one of Japan's most popular ski resorts, has year-round appeal. During summer and fall, pristine trails and mountain-biking tracks snake through the surrounding pine forests. After a rigorous day of sport, stop by The Barn restaurant, inspired by traditional Hokkaido farm architecture, where fresh produce is served with French flair and warm hospitality. Afterwards, retire to the homey Living Lounge, where all that's left to worry about is which wine you'll sip as you laze by the fireplace. Kimamaya Boutique Hotel proudly bears the Odin brand. Created by Nicolas Gontard and his Norwegian partners Bjorn and Chris Fjelddahl, the brand is dedicated to developing real estate and creating hospitality experiences that encompass "intelligent luxury."

      Architecture

      The purity of Zen design

The style is Scandinavian in places, with slatted lampshades hanging from the ceiling, but the Nordic influence never overrides the purity of the Zen concept. Star architect Koichi Ishiguro beautifully re-designed the building while keeping the original wooden framework to retain the history of the building, which brings a Japanese touch to the Swiss chalet-style roof. He also placed special attention on using sustainable, renewable, and recyclable materials.

      Interior Design

      A cocoon upon the mountainside

Andrew Bell from Earth Home Limited worked on interiors of the rooms, some of which have their own mezzanine floors. Using a warm palette of chocolate wood, grey walls, rich elm floors and smooth black granite, he created simple and soothing spaces that are minimal yet luxurious. Beds wrapped in soft down and cotton sit alongside straight-edged furnishings from Odin’s own collection.

      Nicolas Gontard

Kimamaya Boutique Hotel by Odin is the product of Frenchman Nicolas Gontard's vision and passion. After selling an Asia-based international telecommunications business in 2006, he instinctively felt it was too early to retire to his vineyards in Burgundy. Together with Norwegian partners Bjorn and Chris Fjelddahl, he embarked on building a luxury brand of residential properties and hospitality products. One of them was Kimamaya Boutique Hotel and its associated dining venue, The Barn by Odin. Gontard's passion for Niseko and his involvement in the community mean he is often seen sharing a beer and sushi with locals, jumping on a mountain bike to test-ride the surrounding trails, or sharing insider knowledge with his guests.
