One enters 1477 Reichhalter—an Old World, minimalist haven in the Dolomites—by stepping upon a wooden-floored hallway that literally echoes with history. “All we did was polish the floors and restore the wood paneling; most of the furniture was already here,” says visionary Klaus Dissertori proudly of his hotel’s restaurant, which serves up Italian-inspired homecooked meals. Indeed, in its 500-plus years the house that now welcomes guests to Lana, a mountainous village known as the Orchard of South Tyrol, has been a mill, a bakery, a sawmill, a barn, a stable, a butcher’s shop, a tavern, and a coffeehouse. It is, in short, a place of lives well lived, and to stay here is to feel the pulse history in a fully renovated amalgamation of chalk stones, old wood, flagged floors, and iron. And yet, 1477 Reichhalter is no museum—far from it! Though it is the kind of upscale place that could easily have closed itself off to the outside world, the hotel instead built a mini town square and a living room, both wonderful gathering points for guests and locals alike. To stay at 1477 Reichhalter, between Bolzano and Merano in the shadow of the Vigiljoch, is not only to celebrate the past but to forge authentic new memories.

Ranging from the 20-square-meter Standard Room to the 35-square-meter Superior Room, with numerous options in between, 1477 Reichhalter’s accommodations feature midcentury design as well as flea market finds, all set against the patina of historical walls. In order to create a relaxing environment and promote mixing with locals and other guests, the hotel has intentionally decided to forgo putting televisions or telephones in guestrooms, though each does come with a Marshall radio and a carefully curated set of books.
