The name Dijon usually calls to mind, well, mustard. But the quaint French town in the northeast of France has a lot more going for it than just seasoning. The capital of Burgundy has a rich cultural heritage, beautiful vineyards, is one of four official French cities of gastronomy, and, now has its first Design Hotels™ member—Vertigo Hotel. Set in a Haussmann-style building—more Paris than Cote d’Or—Vertigo’s interiors are a black-and-white contrast to the exterior. The interior’s modern color scheme is aided by Ligne Roset design pieces, suspended beds, mirror-cum-media-entertainment-system, photograph-bedecked ceilings and many other little surprises. With a focus on service, the hotel welcomes guests as soon as they enter the driveway. A black retro bar, meanwhile, offers vintage burgundy wines, Champagne, and cocktails. And lastly, an indoor swimming pool, hammam, and sauna ensure the ultimate holiday repose.

    ARCHITECTURE

    Paris in Dijon

Built in the popular Parisian style of the late 1800s, the Haussmann-esque building was constructed on Place Darcy, one of Dijon’s most beautiful squares. Named “Hôtel de la Cloche”, the owner Edmond Goisset opened his new luxury hotel in the very heart of “modern” Dijon. Having exchanged hands in 1902, the next owner Louis Gorges brought the hotel to a new level of fame, attracting a number of internationally celebrated artists such as Joan Baez, Joe Cocker, and Jean Reno to its doors. After careful restoration, the Vertigo is certain to reinstate the building’s renown.

A play of contrasts in the Embassy bar, which includes an original decorative ceiling, gilded frames, chandeliers, and modern furniture, stress its unique character. Already a favorite in the city, the bar serves vintage burgundy wines, Champagne, and cocktails.

    INTERIOR DESIGN

    Hung up on modern

With a clear black-and-white color scheme, the Vertigo’s 42 rooms are full of little surprises: suspended beds, a mirror-media-entertainment-system, a wardrobe door-turned-bathroom-mirror, and numerous welcome gifts. Proudly featuring French designers, the rooms beguile with “Nuage” lighting by Hervé Langlais, “Circles” coffee tables by Maria Jeglinska, and selected Ligne Roset pieces.

    Bruno and Christophe Massucco

Local heroes in Dijon, twin brothers Bruno and Christophe Massucco have opened a series of successful hotels and restaurants in the area. The hoteliers of Italian-origin began their careers in the hospitality institutes in Dijon and Grenoble. Given that their parents also owned hotels, one could say that hospitality is in their blood. Purveyors of upcoming trends, their specialty is taking over old properties and creating exciting new identities. The Massucco brothers currently own five hotels in Dijon, each with an individual identity. When they’re not working, they spend time pursuing two of their biggest passions: cars and the Juventus football club out of Turin, Italy.
