Open since June 2014 and set in the heart of bustling Soho, Ham Yard Hotel is Firmdale’s most ambitious project to date. The hotel revolves around a unique tree-filled pedestrian thoroughfare with a Tony Cragg sculpture, 13 individual specialist stores, and an airy restaurant and bar with outdoor dining and drinking. As well as a sumptuous drawing room, library and orangery, the hotel has a spa, a 190-seat theater, and an original 1950s bowling alley imported from Texas. To top it off there is a leafy rooftop garden with sweeping views across the London skyline. Ham Yard is not just a hotel but a destination.

    Rooms & Suites

The Ham Yard’s 91 rooms and suites and 24 residential apartments (with Boffi kitchens) have been individually designed by Kit Kemp. Each features dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the greenery of the courtyard or the London skyline. Comfort is key to a Firmdale bedroom: “There is always a good reading light by a comfortable chair, a really good desk you can work at, and an end-of-bed footstool to help with putting on your shoes. I want people to feel good when they stay with us,” says Kemp. Bathrooms are a sophisticated mix of granite and oak, and launching at Ham Yard is Firmdale's new amenities line, RikRak, ranging from shampoo and conditioner to pillow spray and candles—all designed by Kemp and made in England, and featuring light scents of gardenia and green leaf balanced by orange flower blossom and bergamot.

    Mirror to the Soul

Using the distinctive local landscape of Soho as a reference, London-based architectural design firm Woods Bagot constructed a building complementary to the scale of those in the area, while bringing a fresh contemporary touch to one of London’s key leisure and entertainment districts. At the heart of the building is a new public square that creates a pedestrian route from Golden Square to Piccadilly Circus, breathing new life into this neglected corner of Soho. This is Firmdale’s third build from ground up, having mainly restored or reconstructed buildings previously.

The interiors have been beautifully designed by Kit Kemp in her award-winning luxurious, modern British style, with the new suites at Ham Yard featuring Kit’s own designed fabric collection with Christopher Farr.  “The devil is in the details,” says Kemp, offering an insight into her magic. “The height and shape of a headboard, the detail on a valance, and the trims used on soft furnishings—it can be the smallest thing that captures the imagination in a room.”
