Hotel Wren reflects nearly a decade of vision and persistence—a 1940s roadside motel now transformed into a contemporary desert retreat that honors its history while embracing present-day craft and care.

Cultivating harmony between self and space, Manola Studio has designed spaces that nourish the soul, weaving history with humanism, ritual with intention, and functionality with grace.

The hotel’s proximity to Joshua Tree National Park allows guests direct access to hiking, climbing, and full immersion into the desert landscape.

Positioned within Twentynine Palms, the hotel serves as a grounding point between vast open desert terrain and a quietly emerging creative and cultural scene. Local restaurants, cafés, shops, and galleries are a short drive away. The proximity to Joshua Tree allows guests direct access to hiking, climbing, and immersion in the desert. Indeed, less that 15 minutes from the hotel, the park’s famed giant boulders are the perfect spot for watching the sunset.

Architecture Manola Studio
Built in the classic California Americana motor-lodge typology, the original structure included drive-up access and parking adjacent to guestrooms. The project preserved the building’s footprint and overall rhythm, with the renovation’s guiding principle being to refine rather than to replace. The goal was to bring forward what was authentic and meaningful in the building’s history while shaping it into a more cohesive and considered experience. California modernism, desert vernacular, preservation, and craft have all been translated into purposeful architectural decisions.
Interior design Manola Studio
The material palette is rooted in the Mojave landscape, with custom Saltillo tile, fossilized flagstone, plaster finishes, warm woods, and locally fabricated metalwork creating depth and texture throughout. The interiors were designed to feel warm and grounded, using tones and textures that sit naturally within the desert environment, such as sand, clay, sage, rust, and sun-faded neutrals. The overall effect is warm, grounded, and quietly layered, with an emphasis on craft and authenticity rather than recognizable labels. Much of the furniture and millwork was fabricated locally, while many lighting pieces are vintage. Original artwork throughout was curated over many years.
