in 2010 as the Best New Ski Resort. Several of the 11 structures are arranged around a central square at the bottom of a ski slope, while others nestle up to the edge of a nearby forest. Architects Domenig & Domenig have created a multiuse complex that defies categorization. The outbuildings contain varied guestroom- and apartment-style arrangements, from 2-bedroom suites to 10-bed apartments.

Bedrooms boast untreated, light-finished wood, while design classics by Cassina set the tone. Extravagant gilded pendant lamps by Catellani & Smith and textiles in natural shades create warmth. The baths with mini-spas are all fitted with steam bath, rainforest shower, and taps by Dornbracht. The overall effect is both primitive and progressive, a ski-land getaway that calms the mind and spirit.

I woke as the train pulled into the station. Chur is a charming little city nestled between mountains, but I was there only to catch a bus and drive another hour to the ski town of Laax.
