Often overlooked thanks to its more glamorous neighbor Barcelona, Valencia has in recent years been going through a Bilbao-esque transformation. Case in point: the “Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències” (City of Arts and Sciences) by the world-famous local architect Santiago Calatrava, Sir Norman Foster’s “Palacio de Congreso”, and David Chipperfield’s “Veles i Vents” (America’s Cup Building). Accessible from any hotel Valencia offers a beautiful old quarter with remnants of a Moorish influence, excellent fine-arts museums, and an inventive culinary scene. But despite this wave of new, Valencia hotels still hold on to tradition strongly. Just visit the proud city in March during Las Fallas (the fires) to see how a fiesta is celebrated Valencia-style—colorful “ninots” (giant paper-mâché figures) satirizing a political figure, soap star, or sports idol are everywhere, and the crescendo of fireworks is aptly called the “earthquake”.
