Rooms 328 /Interior Design Alberto Pinto /The Original Theo Gerlach

Parisian architect and designer Alberto Pinto's redesign of the classic 1970s Seaside Palm Beach is much more than the usual superimposition of a new identity on an old structure. Pinto emphasized original design elements to bring them to the fore, resulting in a strong late-modernist statement. Surrounded by a fabulous palm tree oasis at the edge of a nature reserve on Gran Canaria, Seaside Palm Beach is only 45 minutes by car to the islands’ capital Las Palmas. In the immediate vicinity you will find a five-mile long sandy beach and the famous dunes of Maspalomas – everything within easy walking distance. All luxurious rooms and suites are bathed in light and offer impressive views, spoiling you with 360 days of sunshine per year. Guests can dive into fully indulgent modernity in an extensive, state-of-the-art wellness and spa area, where guests are offered a wide range of massage treatments, saunas, thalasso pools, aromatherapy, and other specialty spa packages.

    Rooms & Suites

Rather than play down the retro look of the original 1970s building, Alberto Pinto clarified and decluttered its interiors, introducing a dramatic color scheme and a selection of materials that includes glass, brass, chrome, and travertine. The 328 rooms are divided into four color worlds: beige & brown, yellow & turquoise, violet & green, and coral & blue. The warm tones used on the wall reflect the spectrum of the Mediterranean sunset, seen from the spacious balconies of each room. The furniture is an apt mix of vintage and modern.

    Architecture

    Old-school elegance

Located in an old palm grove, the Miami Beach-inspired façade curves to provide visual relief and a constantly flowing sense of interior and exterior space. Turquoise-mosaic pools and public spaces in a muted palette play up sun and shade. Bold Pucci-style patterns are reinterpreted in an array of different textures and materials, whether sandblasted onto mirrors around the bar, or transformed into expressive light shades. Materials such as chrome, mirrored glass, travertine and marble add strong accents of luxury and old-school elegance.

The overall effect is less retro than contemporary, as Pinto’s scrubbing of unnecessary elements and emphasis on modern materials shows just how forward-looking the original design was in the first place. For this effort the hotel was awarded the prestigious red dot design award in 2004.

    Interior Design

A decadent take on seaside glamour

The 328 rooms reflect the distinct stylistic era of the building, a particularly decadent take on seaside glamour. Pinto’s redesign involved playing up color contrast to celebrate sunset, sea and sand. Thus, walls are bathed in warm tones and floors come alive in cool colors. Furniture is uncluttered and displays clean, rounded lines, accented by chrome, varnish and brass.

    Theo Gerlach

In 2010, hospitality pioneer Theo Gerlach received the title of Hijo Adoptivo (Adopted Son) from the island of Gran Canaria. His status as an honorary citizen has been forty years in the making. Gerlach's continuous efforts to promote sustainable tourism on the Canary Islands started in 1970 when the German native traveled there for the first time. He was so impressed by the beauty of Gran Canaria – not to mention its climate: nearly 365 sunny days per year – that he opened the first hotel on the island four years later. Today his company Seaside Hotels comprises eleven properties, four on the Canary Islands, which he runs himself, one in Valencia (Spain), and six in Germany. An avid golfer, Gerlach is supported as both a player and sponsor at selected golf tournaments on the islands of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
