Design & Culture

Architecture Christopher Chua: KulörGroup

Architecture Christopher Chua: KulörGroup

Inspired by the graceful curves of the traditional Maldivian Dhoni boat, the resort’s pavilion rise like sails on the horizon.

Just nine expansive residences span two private islands. Though intimate, this hidden paradise offers the luxuries of a full resort experience, while boasting some of the Maldives’ largest residences pools, blending eco-luxury with expansive spaces. The style reinterprets Tropical Modernism through a Maldivian lens—architecture that is open, climate-responsive, and materially honest. Inspiration came from the curve of the traditional dhoni boat and the billow of sails, translated into the sweeping white roofs of the public pavilions. The result is both poetic and precise—architecture that breathes with its environment.

Interior design Inge Moore: MUZA Lab

The design draws from the island’s elemental dualities—sunrise and sunset, lagoon and ocean, sand and reef—a reflection of nature in its purest form.

Each space is designed to feel both grounded and weightless, private yet deeply connected to its surroundings. The resort blurs the boundaries between inside and out, structure and nature, making bold use of the island’s cultural textures: woven rope ceilings inspired by traditional crafts, coral stone surfaces recalling local architecture, and a spatial rhythm that echoes the Maldivian dhoni and its connection to sea and sky. The result is a design language that feels at once modern and timeless—refined, sensory, and deeply rooted in place.

Dhoni and Safar Bar A masterpiece of design

Set over the water, Dhoni celebrates Maldivian heritage and maritime culture through a contemporary lens, offering all-day dining shaped by global influences and island traditions.

SAFAR—meaning “journey”—reimagines dining as a voyage around the world. Inspired by the traditional attire of Boduberu dancers, its design references the striking black-and-white sarongs, while the open kitchen, finished in sculptural marble, anchors the space in understated elegance. The experience is conceived as a culinary exploration, blending Maldivian character with international flavors. SAFAR Bar extends the journey into the evening, where intimate sunken cabanas and firelit settings create a sense of secluded atmosphere. Guests can also enjoy private destination dining on the beach with a dedicated chef on request, as well as access to the restaurants and facilities of the neighboring Finolhu resort.
