Why book with us?
Stepping into the stone-clad lobby of C-Hotel&Spa, near the shores of Italy’s Lake Como, you know you're in for a sensory experience. First you'll be hit by the warm, chocolaty smell of freshly ground coffee beans, which lures you deeper into the building. Then, you'll notice the stretched teak reception desk sandwiched between a bustling Italian bar and a family-run confectionary shop that's been baking mouthwatering delicacies on this site for more than 30 years. At Materiaprima restaurant chef Fabrizio Colzani creates fine Italian cuisine, using fresh regional ingredients from nearby farms. The hotel also boasts a concept store, C-Colzani, and the award-winning C-Caffe. The young entrepreneur who built C-Hotel&Spa around his family's existing businesses, Andrea Colzani, hasn't relied on former glories. Instead, he has used his self-taught architectural skills to create a forward-thinking minimalist retreat in the hills.
When the rich and famous build grandiose villas on the edge of Lake Como, as they have done for hundreds of years, they often construct them from ‘seastone’, a rare type of limestone that’s quarried in the nearby Berici Hills. It’s this polished, whitish rock that unifies C-Hotel&Spa owner Andrea Colzani’s minimalist public areas and suites at C-Hotel&Spa, lining the interior surfaces with an unmistakably natural radiance and bridging the wide gaps between pure, square-edged furnishings. Behind the polished glass windows, there are chunky strips of chocolate-brown teak, which help to offset the plain-white walls and ceilings. By cleverly threading this locally quarried limestone through the naturally lit hallways of the glass-fronted building, Colzani has created a blank canvas for artists to decorate during the exhibitions that are often held here.
Light, Simple, and Subtlety Magical
Mario Nanni, known among designers as Italy’s ‘maestro of light’, has developed a unique and timeless lighting concept at C-Hotel&Spa that envelops the building’s corridors in warm funnels of amber and yellow. The idea of timeless design is central to Andrea’s overall concept. ‘I wanted to create a modern resort that would last, that could bridge across ages and styles, in order to remain modern but not be affected by fashion,’ he says. Andrea’s suites are dutifully minimal. But in these 30sqm ‘mini-lofts’, he’s managed to make effective use of another of his self-taught skills—bio architecture—masterfully taking control of the inner workings of the room with soundproofed, moveable walls and ultra-precise air quality control systems. The result, which quickly helps guests forget the pressures of the outside world, is as soothing as it is simple.
Born from the passion of two brothers and set in the glorious Lake Como countryside, C-Hotel&Spa has attracted international attention for its award-winning chocolates and stunning setting. But after sitting down with hotel owners Andrea and Marco Colzani, we learned that there is even more here than meets the eye: a great respect for the land and its people.
MADE BY ORIGINALS
The young entrepreneur Andrea Colzani has proven that he knows a thing or two about sustainable design. After graduating with a degree in economics and business management, he taught himself the basic principles of architecture. Expanding upon his family’s existing business, Colzani designed C-Hotel&Spa, a forward-thinking minimalist retreat in the Brianza hills surrounding Lake Como. He employed the core concepts of green architecture—all 18 of the suites are soundproofed and climate-controlled, creating an extraordinarily soothing effect. His newest property Casa sull’Albero, tucked away on the shores of Lake Como, features 12 loft suites and once more proves that no one knows how to capture the untamed beauty of rural Italy quite like Colzani.
