A Musical Immersion in Brazil

Chez Georges, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The honeyed moan of a cello floats in the equatorial night air. Then the syncopated step of a piano, rhythmic blue-toned chords dancing in double time with the crisp jangle of a pandeiro drum and a samba guitar. Finally he begins to sing in plaintive, lovely Portuguese, as a synthesized drone loop builds beneath his voice. A breeze blows in off Sugarloaf Mountain and we can smell the salt of the Atlantic, the wet vibrancy of the jungle, the flutter of insects.

"SHOW ME YOUR FACE. MAKE ME HEAR YOUR VOICE. PUT STARS IN MY EYES. SONGS IN MY EARS." Jorge Ben Jor

THE PLACE  High on a hilltop in Rio de Janeiro’s lush Santa Teresa neighborhood between the city’s center and the sandy beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, Chez Georges is a showcase of transcontinental modernism housed in an impressive work of Brazilian Brutalism by the nationally renowned architect Wladimir Alves de Souza. Set on the edge of a protected forest and featuring a state-of-the-art music production room, Chez Georges was an ideal setting for Further: Rio de Janeiro, the second edition of a new experiment in immersive, conscientious hospitality. Co-curated by Atrium Creative Retreats, the music collective behind the experiential music and arts festival, FORM Arcosanti, the event featured an intimate writing camp with a group of internationally renowned musicians, including experimental cellist Kelsey Lu, drummer Zach Tretcault of Hundred Waters, Canadian electro-pop duo Purity Ring, LA-based electronic auteur Empress Of, and folk singer Julie Byrne.

SOMETIMES, SERENDIPITY TRIUMPHS AND EVERYTHING JUST COMES TOGETHER. Pierre Bident Moldeva, Chez Georges

An entrepreneur with a specialty in new technologies, Pierre Bident Moldeva left the high-octane Parisian business world behind to start a new life in Brazil with his husband and business partner, Olivier Verwilghen, a musician, polyglot, raconteur, and qualified kite-surfing instructor who also makes a killer passion-fruit caipirinha. After meeting at an exhibition in Verwilghen’s native Belgium, the two traveled the world together before opening their two properties, Chez Georges in Rio and La Ferme de Georges in northeastern Brazil. The couple’s amiable and curious nature, as well as their sustained passion for travel, has instilled in them a great desire to meet new people and make new friends.
