A ringing begins at the base of your skull, deep and generous as a burbling river. You feel lifted, apart, the silence of mind-space opening around you in vast empty concentric spheres. “Open your eyes,” says a voice, finally. You are back again, here on the terrace, dense evergreen foliage billowing in every direction to the mountainous edges of the Catskills. You already feel the seeds of new insights growing within you. Everything starts local, you think, even combatting climate change. Conversations ripple from table to table as dinner is served under a starry northeastern sky and the night’s first performers fill the air with music.
THE HOTEL – A year-round refuge for New York City creatives, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge pays homage to the rich past of the Catskills region while reinventing the notion of the modern-day luxury retreat. Perched high on a hill surrounded by fields of grass and beautifully reimagined by designers Studio Tack, the 38-room mountain lodge hosted the first edition of Design Hotel’s new experimental collaborative hospitality project, Further. The inspirational three-day mind-and-body event, Further: Hunter Mountain, featured a movement and meditation program, communal outdoor dinners, musical performances, art installations, and a panel with the United Nations Development Programme to discuss how art, music, and design can help make global change.
"The Lodge is a modern retrospective of the region’s history and offers a place for visitors to experience the inspiration of the destination."Marc Chodock, Cofounder & Owner of Scribner’s Catskill Lodge
New Yorkers Marc Chodock and Glennon Travis were drawn to the Catskills thanks to the region’s exciting renaissance. Once here, they set out to create a refuge for the city’s creatives. With a background in finance and consulting, Chodock partnered with hospitality veteran Travis, whose experience includes working at New York City lifestyle hotels like Soho House and The Jane, along with the Capri Hotel in Southampton. “Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is reflective of the Catskills’ emerging role as an escape for travelers and adventurers,” says Chodock. Travis agrees. “We’ve built a team of partners who have foresight, creativity, and a passion for the reawakening of the Catskills,” he says. “Scribner’s has a distinct, fresh personality that simultaneously summons up the region’s illustrious past.”
