set an authentic tone. Guests’ quarters boast four-poster beds in a deep crimson red. The dining room incorporates a stone wall and fluted columns, while the oak-paneled library features articulated lights and a silk chinoiserie rug. A sunroom presents Rattan armchairs inspired by Ray Eames, while the bar offers up chicken-wire panels and retro-pink-vinyl barstools.

Architecture A perfect balance

An L-shaped structure constructed in 1919 with warm-colored stone walls and heavy slate roofs...

this stately house boasts numerous doors that open onto the lawn and terrace, heightening the feeling guests have of being snug and protected. All of the structure’s main rooms face south to keep the sun out in summer and to drink it in during the winter. Spacious but informal, the house balances openness with seclusion, sociability with privacy; such is the nature of Troutbeck.
