      Gramercy Park Hotel

Gramercy Park’s genteel glamor is a rare feat. Set in one of the most coveted areas of Manhattan, Julian Schnabel has transformed the sophisticated charm of the storied Gramercy Park Hotel into a full-fledged work of art. The legendary hotel has, for almost nine decades, opened its doors, night after night, to international artists, literati, fashion designers and intellectuals. Today, a lushly landscaped rooftop garden, al fresco dining and engagingly designed interior spaces offer guests many evocative places to dine or linger over drinks. Guests also have exclusive access to the leafy Gramercy Park, New York’s only private park.

By the early 2000s, the property was in distinct need of a makeover. Minimalist architect John Pawson was tapped to refine the exteriors and Julian Schnabel joined the grand efforts to take the Gramercy Park Hotel into the next century. His use of elements like textured reclaimed wood makes the soaring public spaces feel both earthy and sculptural.

      A New York Landmark

Built in 1925 on a site that previously held the home of quintessential New York architect Stanford White, the hotel has been much loved by artists, designers, and literati who frequented its halls. INTERIOR DESIGN

      A Real-life work of Art

Julian Schnabel approached the design of Gramercy Park Hotel as a painter more than a decorator. Bespoke furnishings adorn each of the 185 guestrooms, which are richly layered with velvet curtains, leather wing chairs, and original art by David Salle, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Sensual fabrics and a Renaissance-inspired color palette give guests the feeling of floating through a living masterpiece.

      Rooms & Suites

Each one of the 185 guestrooms is uniquely furnished with a mix of flea market finds and custom-made furniture, referencing different eras. The generous rooms and suites of this New York hotel are richly layered with velvet curtains, leather wing chairs, carved stone mantels, and original art. Sensual fabrics and textures throughout, and a Renaissance-inspired color palette give guests the feeling of floating through a living masterpiece. The property's seven specialty suites are each unique, with spacious living rooms; some also come with dining rooms and bathrooms featuring custom sculpted soaking tubs. A highlight of securing a room at this legendary hotel is getting a key to the exclusive Gramercy Park, the only gated private patch of green in the Big Apple.

      MADE BY ORIGINALS

      Julian Schnabel & Aby Rosen

Oscar-nominated filmmaker and iconic artist Julian Schnabel’s mythic, often-controversial career is rooted in his ability to tap a vast alchemy of sources and materials. Together with real estate mogul and art collector Aby Rosen and Studio 54 co-founder Ian Schrager, Schnabel transformed the century-old Gramercy Park Hotel—once the headquarters for high bohemia—into an exquisite gallery hotel infused with intense feeling and opulent tactility. “Basically, I’m a painter,” Schnabel says, “I built a place I’d like to be in.”
