The Original Julian Schnabel

By the early 2000s, the property was in distinct need of a makeover. Minimalist architect John Pawson was tapped to refine the exteriors and Julian Schnabel joined the grand efforts to take the Gramercy Park Hotel into the next century. His use of elements like textured reclaimed wood makes the soaring public spaces feel both earthy and sculptural.

ARCHITECTURE

A New York Landmark

Built in 1925 on a site that previously held the home of quintessential New York architect Stanford White, the hotel has been much loved by artists, designers, and literati who frequented its halls. Robert T. Lyons originally designed the elegant Renaissance Revival hotel built across from the lush, private Gramercy Park.

A Real-life work of Art

Initially redesigned by Julian Schnabel, Gramercy Park Hotel still bears his painterly mark. Bespoke furnishings adorn each of the 190 guestrooms, which are richly layered with velvet curtains, leather wing chairs, and original art by David Salle, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Sensual fabrics and a Renaissance-inspired color palette give guests the feeling of floating through a living masterpiece.
