      About Your Stay

Upon seeing the elegant former headquarters of the Superior Oil Co. in 2000, André Balazs fell in love and bought it virtually on the spot. By May 2002 the Carrara-marble-clad construction had become his second Standard hotel, this time in the heart of downtown LA. In typical Balazs style, this 12-story hotel and its 207 guestrooms far surpass the established corporate hotel paradigm: the grand lobby is partially a historic architectural landmark with 1950s-era ornaments such as a 15-time zone clock encased in stainless steel. The generously sized guestrooms embody The Standards’ distinctive decor with such highlights as platform beds, oversize bathtubs or showers, custom bath amenities, and mood lighting. The Rooftop Bar, bejeweled with a heated swimming pool, a red Astroturf sundeck, and vibrating waterbed pods (not to mention a bar and dance floor with nightly DJs), is one of Los Angeles’s most coveted nightlife destinations.

This is Not an Office Building

The upside down former Superior Oil Co.’s sign at The Standard, Downtown LA is an initial signifier that the concrete and marble monolith will not necessarily deliver what one would expect from the interior of a building in the center of an international city’s Financial District. The hotel is a series of atmospheres rather than spaces—half tongue in cheek, half overwhelmingly innovative. Much of the original structure’s detailing was salvaged. The building’s two-story lobby, which is partially an architectural and historical landmark, has been entirely preserved. It now welcomes guests with a 38-metre fuchsia “Omnibus” sofa by Vladimir Kagan, and a Jenny Holzer LED installation juxtaposed with the 1950’s era ornaments. The building’s original Carrara-marble creates an air of sophisticated timelessness, which is marked by the seemingly floating escalator and complex photomural wallpaper. Put together, it is all as much a visual sensation as a welcoming hotel.

      Setting the Stage

At The Standard, Downtown LA the walls, floors, sofas, and light fixtures are each grand, unexpected, and conversation-worthy in their own way. But seen as part of a whole, they create what Business Traveller described as ‘a visual treat from the moment you step inside.

The guestrooms range from ‘Medium’ to ‘Bigger Penthouse’ going through ‘Huge,’ ‘Humongous,’ ‘Gigantic’ and ‘Wow!’ (among other sizes). Each is sleek and modern with an inevitable quirky twist. Some guests will find a large ‘foot’ sculpture in the bathroom. Others will encounter a stuffed bunny on their beds—but all will enjoy platform beds, large screen TVs, and extraordinary views.

      André Balazs

With his Standard hotels, visionary hotelier André Balazs revolutionized the U.S. boutique hotel market and reinvented the concept of an affordable hotel experience. Awarded by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Balazs is the President and CEO of André Balazs Properties, which includes a portfolio of eight innovative hotels from New York to Hollywood.
