      About Your Stay

The Sunset Strip is where the Hollywood legend began and continues to this day. Enter André Balazs, hotelier and real-estate developer extraordinaire. It was at this location in 1999 that André launched the iconic Standard, Hollywood, which represented the beginning of a bicoastal and groundbreaking shift in the hospitality industry. Converted from the original 1963 Thunderbird Motel to the snoozy Golden Crest Retirement Home, the curvaceous and supple building was given room to breathe as The Standard, Hollywood. Newsweek calls the result, ‘chic, spare & super cool.’ And indeed it is anything but standard—from the upside-down entrance sign to the Cactus Lounge with a wall-to-wall desertscape and the reception desk adorned with a glass vitrine featuring nightly performance art pieces. The Standard, Hollywood is the place to see and be seen for its youthfully chic and sophisticated clientele.

      Sunset Hip

Working in collaboration with Hollywood set designer Shawn Hausman, André Balazs created this 139-guestroom hotel within the building’s original 1963 frame. Upon walking through the translucent doors it immediately becomes apparent that this is no ordinary hotel. The lobby features a ‘cocoon/conversation room’ with floor-to-ceiling shag carpeting, a DJ spinning cool ambient tunes, Ligne Roset suede sectional seating, and a vitrine showcasing a constantly rotating lineup of keen performance artists. The lobby flows onto the Pool Deck with its trademark cobalt blue Astroturf. The adjacent Cactus Lounge, meanwhile, is surrounded by an enormous photomural of California’s Joshua Tree National Monument.

      Space to Play

Rooms are modern and distinctive, featuring surfboard tables, silver beanbag chairs, platform beds, electric orange bathrooms and Warhol poppy print drapes. Eccentricity doesn’t only hide behind closed doors. Typical for an André Balazs property, the hotel offers an equally stimulating lobby as well as various eating and drinking venues that are the seedbed of the hotel’s exclusive nightlife scene.

      André Balazs

With his Standard hotels, visionary hotelier André Balazs revolutionized the U.S. boutique hotel market and reinvented the concept of an affordable hotel experience. Awarded by the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Balazs is the President and CEO of André Balazs Properties, which includes a portfolio of eight innovative hotels from New York to Hollywood.
