Rooms 55 / Architecture David Baker + Partners Architects / Interior Design Frost Tsuji Architects / The Original Circe Sher, Merritt Sher

Located in the heart of California's North Sonoma wine country, Hotel Healdsburg stands on a historic town square, minutes away from some of the world's best vineyards. The three-story stucco building's warm ambience invites guests to embrace the healthy local lifestyle. Light floods through French doors leading onto private balconies, and artfully landscaped garden paths snake through the well-kept grounds. A garden pool and spa offer serenity and relaxation, while an extensive bar provides a menu of inventive cocktails. But the highlight is star chef Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen restaurant, a celebration of fresh seasonal ingredients straight from the Healdsburg Farmers' Market, served either indoors or out on a garden patio overlooking the historic plaza – usually with a bottle of exclusive local wine. Twice a week, the hotel hosts complimentary tastings featuring local wineries, while live jazz plays in the hotel Fireplace Lounge, completing the picture of tranquil sophistication.

    Architecture

David Baker, Wendy Tsuji & Andrea Cochran

This three-way collaboration between California architects David Baker and Wendy Tsuji, and landscape architect Andrea Cochran, authentically fits into an old town square and the healthy lifestyle of Wine Country. For Baker, it was vital for the three-story, stucco building to have tall ceilings and windows on the ground floor to create an inviting presence. Light is an important element of the overall design, flooding through French doors leading onto private balconies, under trellised walkways, or through a glass-encased, free-standing stairwell, whose center is filled with bamboo shoots. Artfully landscaped areas spill over onto public alleyways that cut across the well-kept grounds; over which steel and glass corridors are suspended, connecting different parts of the hotel.

    Interior Design

    A country-retreat

Guestrooms display a bountiful mix of materials and creature comforts: teak furniture, pecan wood floors, Tibetan rugs, goose-down duvets and six-foot soaking tubs. Adding to the country-retreat feel are Adirondack chairs and the lobby’s bar and fireplace, as well as a screened in porch. The obvious value placed on design is further underlined by the hotel’s own Hand Fan Museum, with fans from around the world on display.

    Made by Originals

    Merritt and Circe Sher

Life father, like daughter. Merritt Sher, founder of influential California real estate firm Terranomics Development, and his daughter are the force behind the award-winning, four-star luxury property Hotel Healdsburg in the heart of Sonoma County. A restaurant entrepreneur and pioneer in commercial real estate, Merritt is a key principal of the Piazza Hospitality Group, where marketing executive Circe presides over public relations and sales. PHG considers itself stewards of its properties and communities, supporting local economies in a manner that protects and nourishes the natural environment. The Shers' coveted corner of California wine country not only wears a radically different design face; it re-imagines the entire guest experience through a greener, more holistic worldview.
