      About Your Stay

If you ever needed reassurance that the spirit of adventure is alive and well, even in the center of London, Blakes is it. Designed by former Bond girl Anouska Hempel, now known globally for her striking interior designs, this refurbished multimillion-pound South Kensington couture hotel is a world of grandeur and exoticism. Behind the black Victorian façade, you'll find a tantalizing fusion of eastern and western styles. Polished mirrors bounce rich walnut tones around the lobby, creating a sense of decadence and theater, while the critically acclaimed subterranean restaurant attracts some of the world's most famous movie stars, actors and designers.

Victorian Townhouse with an exotic heart

Nearly 30 years after its opening, Blakes is still seen as a source of inspiration for hoteliers around the globe. Central to the hotel’s lasting appeal is its elegant, black façade, which hides the opulent interiors (and famous guests) from public view. At Blakes, Hempel’s central concept focuses on providing well-traveled connoisseurs with three key elements: lavish design, swift service, and complete privacy. The thick period walls and lavish furnishings act as a physical cocoon, sheltering guests from unwanted disturbances, but it’s even peaceful out in the shared courtyard, where cocktails are sipped among an explosion of lush green plants.

An eclectic mix of color and culture

Time periods and cultures collide to create an atmosphere at once familiar and unlike any place you’ve ever been before. The sumptuous Library Suite features bookcases lined with antique leather volumes, a hand-stenciled wooden floor, and luxuriously abundant fabrics that cocoon a four poster bed.

Each of the 47 refurbished guest rooms at Blakes takes inspiration from a different far-off land. Anouska Hempel weaves a seductive blend with rich Eastern tones and textures that come together in a blaze of warmth, and there are intriguing artifacts from her travels in Indochina, Africa and the Middle East. It’s undeniably sumptuous, but the effect is soothing, rather than overbearing.

Anouska Hempel, Meir Abutbul & Navid Mirtorabi

New Zealand-born film and television actress-turned-hotelier Anouska Hempel is one of the world's most celebrated designers and a noted figure in London society. Her work spans architecture, interiors, furniture, fashion, garden, and product design. Her first venture, Blakes Hotel in South Kensington, was created in 1978 as the world's first luxury boutique hotel. More recently Hempel teamed up with hotelier Navid Mirtorabi and Meir Abutbul, owner of the cafe chain Apostrophe, and opened the eighty-bedroom boutique hotel La Suite West, bordering London's Hyde Park. Leading a prestigious team of architects and designers, Hempel passionately practices her mantra: ‘design, refine and repeat.’
