    Rooms & Suites

Each room at this luxury boutique hotel in London’s South Kensington /Chelsea neighborhood is styled uniquely, with rich cardinal reds or washes of tea rose evoking the vivid colors of far-off places. There's the Corfu Suite, which showcases a tall four-poster bed swathed in romantic pure-white muslin, and the Empress Josephine Suite, where opulent shades of ebony and gold shroud the tented bed. TVs, telephones, and iPod docks by Bang & Olufsen make it possible for every room to function as a self-contained hideaway. And with the staff placing a special emphasis on privacy, even the luscious shared courtyard feels secluded and cocoon-like.

    ARCHITECTURE

Victorian Townhouse with an exotic heart

Nearly 40 years after its opening, Blakes is still seen as a source of inspiration for hoteliers around the globe. Central to the hotel’s lasting appeal is its elegant, black façade, which hides the opulent interiors (and famous guests) from public view. At Blakes, Hempel’s central concept focuses on providing well-traveled connoisseurs with three key elements: lavish design, swift service, and complete privacy. The thick period walls and lavish furnishings act as a physical cocoon, sheltering guests from unwanted disturbances, but it’s even peaceful out in the shared courtyard, where cocktails are sipped among an explosion of lush green plants.

Time periods and cultures collide to create an atmosphere at once familiar and unlike any place you’ve ever been before. The sumptuous Library Suite features bookcases lined with antique leather volumes, a hand-stenciled wooden floor, and luxuriously abundant fabrics that cocoon a four poster bed.

    INTERIOR DESIGN

An eclectic mix of color and culture

Each of the 45 refurbished guest rooms at Blakes takes inspiration from a different far-off land. Anouska Hempel weaves a seductive blend with rich Eastern tones and textures that come together in a blaze of warmth, and there are intriguing artifacts from her travels in Indochina, Africa and the Middle East. It’s undeniably sumptuous, but the effect is soothing, rather than overbearing.
