      About your stay

Perched on a cliff-top in Mawgan Porth, one of Cornwall’s tiniest villages, The Scarlet faces the most stunning stretch of the region’s National-Trust protected coastline. True to its name, the Scarlet exudes warmth, thanks in no small part to the flame red, log-fired hot-tubs located directly on the beach next to a rugged rockface. The hot tub is only one of the hotel’s breathtaking natural flourishes—details like panoramic views and an all-natural, reed-filtered pool with granite diving rock are sure to impress. Even inside, one continues to feel this intense proximity to nature. A restorative hotel spa serves as a quiet, almost spiritual sanctuary for relaxation. The Scarlet restaurant, helmed by local chef Tom Hunter, prepares hearty dishes of local, seasonal fare that are surprising without being pretentious.

      Architecture

      Jon Capel and Peter Sutton

The brief was specific: create a unique and sustainable building that merges with and enhances the local environment. The result is stunning: a cliff-top hotel whose spaces, lines, and spectacular views have the power to both impress and soothe. To achieve this effect, architects Jon Capel and Peter Sutton made clever use of the local topography. Their building envelope directly abuts the coastal landscape, with the cliff-top terrain wrapping up against and over the lower bedrooms via a green roof that links the natural-fronting ground level to the sea thrift roof beyond. The duo opted reject the traditional long-corridor hotel plan in favor of clustering bedrooms together in small groups connected by short spaces, some curved in plan. The result is an unusually cozy, familial atmosphere that permeates the property.

      Eye-popping Views

The common centerpiece of each of the Scarlet’s 37 rooms is is the dramatic view over the cliff towards the ocean beyond. In both private and public areas of the hotel, wide picture windows ease the transition between interior and exterior space.

Although the building’s architecture emphasizes clean, minimal lines, the interiors pop with color. Bold fabrics feature throughout the property, ranging from eye-catching floral patterns to sumptuous green velvets.

      Emma Stratton

Along with her two sisters, Emma Stratton took over Cornwall's multi-award-winning Bedruthan Steps hotel from their parents in 2002. Seven years later, they launched The Scarlet, a sensuous and luxurious eco-hotel, right next door. “The hotel industry consumes vast amounts of resources and is incredibly wasteful, Emma explain, “we wanted to show that there is a different way.” Only after the sisters had bought the property did they start devising a plan for the sort of hotel they wanted. Although financial stability is the key to any business venture, Stratton was more interested in developing a hotel her family would be proud of – the result is what Stratton likens to a baby with three mothers. Choosing design elements from her favorite hotels around the world, Stratton matched luxury with warm, friendly service, and above all, sustainability.
