      About your stay

Just like the successful cafés that Canan Özdemir and Ferit Baltacioglu have opened across Istanbul, The House Hotel Galatasaray (their first foray into the hotel business) commands a privileged location. Istanbul’s bohemian Çukurcuma quarter has inspired countless artists. Acclaimed Turkish design studio Autoban won several awards for its work in restoring the five-story Zenovitch building and bringing out its original details. The sensitive makeover means older features, such as the solid marble staircase that stretches through the lobby, sit comfortably among contemporary wall moldings and polished parquet floors. A gray stone fireplace warms diners in the all-day roof lounge, which has views over downtown Istanbul, while the 20 crisp white rooms and suites with their high ceilings and marble bathrooms, are an ideal base for exploring the winding streets of Çukurcuma and the rest of Beyoglu. Guests looking for an inside track on the latest food, design, and art can follow an expert from the exclusive guiding service Locally Istanbul, or spend a day with their own personal shopper.

      Location, location, location

All of Canan Özdemir and Ferit Baltacioglu’s properties have desirable addresses in happening parts of the city. So when they spotted a gap in the market for a new kind of luxury hotel, Çukurcuma – Istanbul’s bohemian antiques district – seemed an obvious choice. And the five-story Ottoman mansion they found there fitted perfectly with their vision. The building was in need of restoration, so the pair enlisted the help of the Turkish design studio Autoban, co-founded by Canan’s sister. What the team created would win them awards and praise from the world’s travel press. Original features like the mustard-colored façade and the lobby’s marble staircase were retained, and then complemented by new additions like fawn carpets and delicate wall moldings.

In stark contrast to the subtle wall decorations, the hotel’s floors are a study in swirling crests and hexagons, which also appear on certain ceilings, handrails and screens. Brass-studded leather sofas in the roof lounge hug a sizzling fireplace carved from solid stone, tucked beneath exposed wooden beams. The suites have taupe and gray sofas, custom-made by Autoban, facing their LCD TVs. The ceilings in most rooms hit 2.5m, adding to the overall feeling of light and space.

      Canan Özdemir and Ferit Baltacioglu

It was the runaway success of their café brand – The House Café – that inspired Canan Özdemir and Ferit Baltacioglu to enter the hotel business. Since the niche-carving House Hotel Galatasaray launched in April 2010, the business partners have gone on to open two more hotels: The House Hotel Nisantasi and The House Hotel Bosphorus. All three have outstanding city-center locations. Although Canan’s background is in auditing and Ferit’s is in mechanical engineering, they found a shared love in launching new cafés in exciting places. In addition to the three hotels, Canan and Ferit now operate 12 cafés across Istanbul, plus franchised cafés in Antalya and Ankara.
