One doesn’t often associate industrial design with an unspoiled beach. But in Thailand, at the all suites and villas Indigo Pearl resort, nestled on the lush Nai Yang beach on the northwest coast of Phuket, metal is alluringly mixed with traditional Thai décor and cutting edge art. What it spells for design conscious travelers is a new kind of tropical island retreat to swoon over. For owner Wichit Na-Ranong, the hotel is a tribute to Phuket’s tin mining history and his family’s role in that once-flourishing trade. And both island and his family have reason to be proud: Complementing its unusual style, the Indigo Pearl offers up the perfect recipe for relaxation, with three restaurants and bars, a café, three swimming pools, and an award-winning spa.

    Architecture

    Bill Bensley

One of South East Asia’s leading resort architects as well as a visionary landscape and interior designer, Bill Bensley has a keen eye for integrating a structure’s architecture into its lush surroundings, but not without a touch of drama. In Indigo Pearl’s Rebar lounge, the traditional wooden-beamed roof is punctuated with industrial lighting, a reference to the island’s mining past. At the award-winning Coqoon Spa, Bensley takes the concept of being “cocooned” (before a beauty transformation) rather literally with the Nest, an impressive wicker structure hung from a giant banyan tree.

The industrial setting takes on darker tones at the Dirty Monstera bar where heavy doors on pulleys, and specially commissioned metal lighting and tabletops bring mining equipment and the island’s past to mind.

    Suite Trade

The private pool villas feature a neutral palette where polished and tinted concrete floors and blackened-steel furniture with bronze rivets are warmed by the tropical timber of traditional Thai décor, and the lush setting of the open-plan spaces.

    Wichit Na-Ranong & Prakaikaew Na-Ranong

Wichit Na-Ranong has leadership in his blood. His forefathers revolutionized the island’s trade sector with tin mining. And Na-Ranong, himself, followed suit in the 1980s by pushing to establish a new industry here—tourism. The first President of the Tourism Council of Thailand and formerly on the board of Thai Airways International, the Phuket local refuses to rest on his laurels. Along with his daughter Prakaikaew Na-Ranong, he now pushes the envelope yet again with Indigo Pearl. This bold new resort is just what you’d expect from the man called “the father of Phuket’s tourism.”
