In the Swiss Alps, high above the snow-laden roofs of Zermatt, a conifer-studded mountainside is bisected by the sharp lines of a modern alpine hideaway. Sitting  serenely in the shadow of the Matterhorn, the Omnia is a structural and stylistic study of the intersection of Continental influence and American modernism. Here, primal elements come together as a harmonious whole. Fires crackle in black, egg-shaped stoves, while shades of dark granite and white oak accent custom-made furnishings by local cabinet makers. Private balconies offer spectacular views of the saw-toothed peaks that surround the car-free town of Zermatt.

      Ali Tayar

Architect and designer Ali Tayar has brought the American Modernist sensibility across the Atlantic and set it 1,649 meters above sea level with furnishings and spaces based on local materials, precision manufacturing, and European craftsmanship. Tayar shares an aesthetic and history with forefathers Mies van der Rohe, Raymond Loewy, Jens Risom, and Vladimir Kagan and combines an appreciation of modernism with eco-sustainability. Energy consciousness is visible in the perforated white oak ceiling panels. The ceiling is treated as a system, with lighting, soundproofing, air-conditioning, and heating elements glimpsed through circular and oval cut-outs.

      Interior Design

      Structure Meets Style

Timeless taste prevails over surprise or theatricality, but this doesn’t preclude originality. Ali Tayar’s standing cylindrical lamps’s solid oak post pierces a laser-cut anodized aluminum “shelf,” positioned like an L-shaped bookend turned 90 degrees. The simple design reflects Tayar’s environmental philosophy: “If material is energy, then using less material saves energy.”

      Alexander Schärer

Born in Bern, Switzerland, Alexander Schärer studied in Lausanne at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and spent two years in the Management Systems Department at Procter + Gamble AG in Geneva. In 1993, he joined the management board of his family's company USM U. Schärer Söhne AG, a manufacturer of modular furniture in Münsingen, Switzerland. Since 2000, Schärer has been acting as president of the board. His company The Omnia AG built the tranquil, design-focused mountain lodge of the same name in the romantic Visper Valley of Zermatt. As its name implies, The Omnia is "all encompassing" – from the great wide world to the smallest detail, it sets the standard.
