Giardino Mountain couldn't exist anywhere but Champfèr, the Swiss Alpine village a five-minute stroll away from St. Moritz. From the hotel's exclusive mountain lounge, which offers views some 2,128 meters above sea level, to the inspiring sgraffito by local artist Steivan Könz, the hotel has been renovated and designed with an innate respect for its mountain setting. Hands-on hoteliers Daniela and Philippe Frutiger used local stone and fine parquets throughout the hotel, which was restored and remodeled to provide soul-nourishing spaces, including a tranquil, state-of-the-art wellness spa. Earthy tones give the 78 rooms and suites a feeling of warmth and coziness. In the restaurants, one of which is run by Rolf Fliegauf, regional products are combined with flair and imagination. The hotel's ethos is to offer a relaxed atmosphere with attentive service. And thanks to the point-to-point connections offered by Giardino Group's private airline, this often begins before check-in.
Just as its alpine setting is a delicate balance of the elements, so the Giardino Mountain balances modernity and heritage. The hotel stands in the building of the former Chesa Guardalej hotel. It has undergone an extensive transformation, preserving the local Engadine architecture and fusing it with clean interior design. From the outside, the hotel has a typical Engadine appearance: thick parchment-colored walls keep out the cold mountain air, while the small recessed windows let in acres of natural light. One of the most famous hallmarks of the Engadine style is sgraffito, an engraving technique where decoration is carved into plaster walls.
Within the whitewashed lobby there is a sophisticated mix of neutral tones and woods. Here, vibrant fuchsia and lime velvets add a touch of unexpected flamboyance. The spectacular floral chandelier, framed by a simple white corridor, brings to mind a huge bouquet of wild flowers cascading down a snowy mountain. In the 78 bedrooms and suites, earthy colors, tactile fabrics and the clever use of natural wood provide guests with additional warmth.
The lives of Daniela and Philippe Frutiger have been connected to the Giardino Hotel Group ever since they met at its first property in Ascona in 1994. Together they repositioned and expanded the Swiss hotel brand into a successful business encompassing three hotels, the private airline Fly Giardino and a beauty and cosmetics line, Dipìù. Philippe, the firm's CEO, trained as a cook before learning the ropes of hotelery in his native Switzerland and abroad. His wife Daniela, originally from southern Germany, is a trained beautician and pharmacist and the group's project manager, presiding over interior design and spa operations. The Frutigers' key values - quality of life, sustainability and service leadership - are exhibited throughout their properties in a fresh interpretation of luxury for the modern traveler.
