Situated adjacent to the base station in Laax, rocksresort takes its name and identity from the surrounding landscape. Finished in rough-hewn stone, the cubic exterior of this hotel complex succeeds at blending in with its environment, whilst also standing as a bold design statement. The exciting self-contained complex of architecturally minimalist cube-shaped buildings houses furnished holiday apartments, shops, restaurants and bars – all arranged around a central square. The interiors of the two- and four-bedroom apartments echo the clean lines of the consciously minimalist exteriors. Natural materials from the local region are used throughout the apartments to create a warm and inviting atmosphere and light colors create a pleasant contrast.

Inside the minimalist apartments, local quartzite stone is used for the kitchen tops, walls, and bathrooms (which turn into steam rooms and include tubs that are deep stone troughs). An open-plan living area has designer lighting, concrete and limestone, underfloor heating, and Cassina sofas, while the bedrooms (two or four) have storage cleverly hidden in untreated oak walls. Among the accessories are Catellani & Smith lamps, Alessi cutlery, and Schott glassware. Unlike most other European ski resorts, rocksresort is fully integrated, so you can purchase everything, even lift tickets, with your room card key.

    Architecture

    Reflecting the rockslide in Flims

An environmentally sensitive yet bold architectural concept, it is not wonder rocksresort won the 2010 Design Award in the Best New Ski Resort category by Wallpaper magazine. Several of the eleven structures are arranged around a central square at the bottom of a ski slope, while others nestle up to the edge of a nearby forest. Architects Domenig and Domenig, authors of outstanding commercial and private projects in and around Switzerland, have created a multi-use complex that defies categorization. There is no standardization here: the various outbuildings contain different guestroom and apartment-style arrangements, from two-bedroom suites to ten-bed apartments.

    Interior Design

    Calming the mind and spirit

Interiors reflect the cubic format of the buildings and feature lighter materials to contrast with the awe-inspiring landscape where bedrooms feature untreated, light-finished wood. Design classics by Cassina set the tone.

The extravagant gilded pendant lamps by Catellani & Smith, and textiles in natural shades, create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The baths with mini-spa are all fitted with steam bath, rainforest shower, and taps by Dornbracht. The overall effect is both primitive and progressive, a ski-land getaway that calms the mind and spirit.

    Finding Infinity

    Powerful Thinking at rocksresort

When you own a mountain, you have a mountain-sized responsibility to protect the land around you. Fortunately, Reto Gurtner, whose glorious rocksresort, tucked away in Graubünden, Switzerland, is bent on running an entire mountain with sustainable energy. And through hydroelectricity, solar power, and much more, he’s doing just that.

    Reto Gurtner

Tech-savvy Reto Gurtner is an out-of-the-box thinker who is turning the Alps hotel industry on its ear. A seasoned traveler, he launched Switzerland's only travel website LAAX.COM in 1995, before taking on the epic rocksresort, a cubist-inspired ski and snowboarding retreat operated by Gurtner’s company Weisse Arena Gruppe. Rocksresort is one of the most innovative mixed-use hotel/condo complexes in the world, made from 500 tons of 40-million-year-old quartzite stone. Not always an easy task in the tradition-bound world of mountain hospitality, Gurtner loves to widen people’s conception of what is possible.
