Toni Ramis

Now it’s personal

Toni Ramis has spent most of his life working for the family business. But with Nakar Hotel in Palma de Mallorca, the Mallorcan real estate developer-turned-hotelier has finally found a passion all his own.

Toni Ramis, the successful real estate developer behind the recently opened Nakar Hotel in Palma de Mallorca, doesn’t get much time away from work. But for him, that’s nothing new.

“Growing up, we always mixed business and family, every day,” said the native Mallorcan. “Lunch or dinner, we’re talking about business. We are used to it.”

Ramis has spent most of his life working for the family business, a nearly 80-year-old enterprise that today consists of Commercial Ramis and Manufacturas Ramis, and now, Nakar Hotel, an enclave of sophisticated localism that opened in summer 2016 in the heart of the island's capital.

It’s this feeling where it doesn’t matter if you’ve been there before. Every time you go, it’s like it’s the very first time.

But the Ramis business dates back to 1939, when Toni’s grandfather, Antonio, opened a leather factory in the town of Inca. In the 1960s, Mallorca experienced its first big tourism boom, and the business flourished. Toni was only about eight years old when he was first called upon to pitch in.

“One day, I was just given a notebook, and I had to sell,” he said.

Eventually Ramis left to study at Barcelona University. After graduating, he lived in London and Munich, to discover its people and culture. Soon after, he worked briefly for Iberostar Hotels on independent projects in Tenerife and Lloret de Mar.

But finally Ramis’s father, Paco, asked him to return and help run what had by then transformed primarily into a real estate concern.

“I was 28 when he called me back to the family business,” said Ramis. Since then, he and his brother, Juan, have worked on a string of successful projects in Palma and Inca. Antonio passed away in 1991 and Paco in 2012, leaving Toni and Juan to carry the torch. Ramis married, and he and his wife, Joana, a civil servant, had three children: two boys, Xisco 6, and Joan Toni, 2, and 8-year-old Martina (“I think she wouldn’t need to be the oldest to be the boss,” Ramis quipped).

In 2013, Ramis got the chance of a lifetime: to take over a building constructed by his grandfather in the 1960s on Palma’s Avinguda Jaume III—one of the liveliest shopping streets in the Balearic capital. His grandfather had originally built it as a hotel, but later his father turned it into an office building.

“Now, 25 years later,” said Ramis, “it's me, the third generation of the family, bringing it back to its original use—and even bringing back its original name: Nakar Hotel.”

Ramis threw himself headlong into the project, working 15-hour days for a year and a half, imbuing the hotel with a level of comfort, style, and understated luxury that sets a new standard on the island.

Localism, said Ramis, was “very, very important to me.” Not only do the architect, interior designer, and chef all hail from the island, but the 57-room hotel is fashioned from local materials, mostly oak wood and native stone. “Our pool, it’s covered in Mallorcan stone the same color as our sand,” said Ramis. “So when you’re on the rooftop, you can see the same color as on the sand beaches.”

With Nakar, the Mallorca native has finally found a project that allows him to share with visitors the enchantment he has always found on the island where he was born: the air, the light, the breathtaking natural diversity.

“We have such beautiful beaches, and then we have mountains that fall into the sea,” said Ramis. “Every time you come here, it’s like the very first time.”
