Like an island within an island, Hotel Cort sits at the epicenter of the historic and increasingly cosmopolitan city of Palma de Mallorca. Guests will find quiet inspiration in the 16 rooms and suites designed by self-styled ‘urban archeologist’ Lázaro Rosa-Violán, whose framed maps and cool splashes of ultramarine color hint at the hotel’s proximity to the sea (the nearest beach is just a fifteen-minute walk away). It’s equally easy for guests to mingle with locals in the hotel’s Mallorquin restaurant, which spills onto the sundrenched cobbles of Plaça Cort. This central plaza is home to Palma’s Baroque-era town hall and a centuries-old olive tree that acts as a natural meeting place for locals, making it the ideal base for weekending visitors who want to uncover the real Mallorca, far from the usual ‘fun in the sun’ beach resorts.

      Architecture

      Old new Mallorcan style

The former bank that houses Hotel Cort is now more than a hundred years old. That’s relatively young compared with Palma’s seventeenth-century town hall, which sits on the other side of the square, but the hotel does share some of the same features, such as the delicate stone moldings that edge the windows and the elegant sandstone balconies. Along with more obvious design choices like allowing the restaurant to merge seamlessly with the public square, these subtle touches help guests connect with the local area and its history.

Subtle nods to Scandinavia’s rich maritime history can be found in the hotel’s spacious rooms and suites, with framed maps on the walls and naked timber boards underfoot. Here, and in the bathrooms and private lounges, quality materials like leather, marble and local linen complement the homely yet indulgent feel.

      Lázaro Rosa-Violán

Working with the old bank’s architectural idiosyncrasies, rather than against them, interior designer Rosa-Violán gave each area of the hotel its own distinct blend of styles.

      MADE BY ORIGINALS

      Lázaro Rosa-Violán

Spanish style hunter Lázaro Rosa-Violán, renowned for his work at restaurants, bars and shops around the world, knows how to get results. “The interior designer is an actor“, he says. “He must dress up and change roles, understand new identities and integrate them with his own.” At Hotel Cort (and Hotel Pulitzer, another member hotel in Buenos Aires) this saw him going beyond the usual remit of an interior designer, taking charge of how the lighting, ambiance, sleeping areas and food worked together to make a complete experience.
