      About Your Stay

In the cultural center of Madrid, on the Carrera de San Jerónimo, Hotel Urban invites guests into a world of avant-garde design, art, and technology behind a steel and glass facade. One enters through a tubular atrium crafted in stainless steel and alabaster that leads to a majestic reception area paneled in black Zimbabwe stone with metallic seam finishes. But an alternative entrance—through the crystal floors, silver sofas, and transparent tables of the popular Oyster Bar—is inspiring in another way. Here, glass mosaics and walls covered in Brazilian rusted stone create a cosmopolitan setting. The hotel’s 96 elegant rooms and suites feature ancient art—such as a 2,000-year-old Buddhist figure—as well as leather headboards, antique furniture, and bathrooms separated by glass screens that can be moved at the touch of a button. On the roof, the pool and restaurant offer seclusion and spectacular views of the city.

      ARCHITECTURE
      The Light Within

This modern new building crowns entrepreneur Jordi Clos’ collection of hotels. With a façade of steel and glass, Hotel Urban stands out against the neighborhood’s rather classical aesthetic. Still, the prevalence of solidity and a vertical composition of the adjacent constructions are upheld by the architects in Hotel Urban’s façade. When entering through the large double-height portico, the main goal of the project is revealed: creating a unique space with the highest quality materials in which every design feature reflects luxury without pretension. A tubular atrium leads to the reception area that is the center of the structure and majestically welcomes visitors. The initial impression of the hall is an apparent interplay of shapes, energies, and lights that provoke both tension and beauty.

      INTERIOR DESIGN
      Primitive Meets Powerful

The tables and wall coverings in the hotel’s exquisite Europa Decó restaurant are made from ebony, a tropical wood. The chairs are upholstered in luxurious handcrafted leather, and at the back of the restaurant, in Urban’s inner courtyard, more sculptures from Papua New Guinea round off the distinct atmosphere that is palpable throughout the property.

The Derby Hotels Collection began in Barcelona in 1968 with the opening of Hotel Derby, an icon in the glorious old heart of the new Barcelona. The project continues with the latest generation of the Clos family who share the same passion for art, design, and fine hospitality. Under chairman Jordi Clos, a Catalan businessman with close ties to the Barcelona tourism sector, and CEO Joaquim Clos, the collection has grown to include establishments in Barcelona, Madrid, London, and Paris. Avid art collectors, the Clos family has moved hundreds of art objects—including Mayan, Egyptian, Roman, and Buddhist works—from their private collection to their hotels. With the Derby Hotels, the Clos family has united the perfect marriage of luxury and culture, upholding their position as one of the most prestigious hotel companies in Spain.
