      About Your Stay
      Hotel Único Madrid

Leaving behind the bustle of Madrid's Golden Mile and entering the tranquil 19th-century palace that houses Hotel Único Madrid, you're immediately filled with a sense of peace. Behind the hotel’s elegant white façade, a majestic staircase, marble mosaic floors, high ceilings, and huge windows fuse together perfectly to preserve the ambiance of the private noble home the building once was. Now, after an all-encompassing redesign, it's back as an indulgent city retreat right in the heart of Salamanca—one of Madrid's wealthiest districts. The beating heart of the hotel is the tranquil garden, where guests come to relax and enjoy a drink after a busy day of visiting the boutique shops, museums, and lush parks that surround this one-of-a-kind, 44-room property, which just so happens to also be the home of a two-Michelin-starred chef—just what you’d expect here in Salamanca, where nothing stands between you and total relaxation.

      ARCHITECTURE
      Aurelio Rubio

Originally a mansion built in the 1800’s, Hotel Único Madrid and its public spaces still retain the atmosphere of a charming aristocratic hideaway, thanks in part to the vision of architect Aurelio Rubio. Behind the white façade, large torches flank the doorway, while spectacular mosaic floors and a black marble table help to create a sense of drama, even as you enter the reception area. Lush linens, silks, and velvet in neutral colors, meanwhile, create welcoming hidden spaces for guests to discover and enjoy. Throughout the hotel, the traditional and the modern mix effortlessly; alongside the centuries-old staircase, which reaches up through the atrium at the center of the hotel, hangs a floating, ribbon-like modern art installation by Madrid-based artist Jacinto Moros.

      INTERIOR DESIGN
Maria José Cabré & Pilar Garcia Nieto

In the bedrooms, high ceilings and grandiose windows allow light to flood in—a fact utilized to full effect by designers Maria José Cabré & Pilar Garcia Nieto who placed cozy, neutral rugs artfully on the polished wooden floors to catch the Madrid sunshine.

      Pau Guardans

There are entrepreneurs who ride trends and there are those who drive them. The Barcelona-bred hotelier Pau Guardans is decidedly of the latter kind. A veteran in the hotel business, he helped introduce design into the Spanish hospitality sector. In 2001, he struck out on his own with Único Hotels. Five years later Guardans introduced Único’s inaugural property, the Grand Hotel Central, once again driving the market into the future, but this time by looking toward the past with a 1920s-era office tower in Barcelona’s medieval El Born neighborhood. Hotels, says Guardans, should function as ‘engines of local communities’, a principle that governed his second and third properties: Hotel Miró, in Bilbao, and the Único, in Madrid, which opened in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Just being state-of-the-art wasn’t enough for Guardans; both hotels aim to connect guests with the rich local cultures at their doorsteps.
