Rooms 41 / Architecture José Maria de Aguilar / Interior Design Elvira Blanco Montenegro / The Original

Originally an affluent apartment house designed in 1883 by architect José María de Aguilar, the handsome red-brick Hospes Puerta de Alcalá is an icon of Bourbon Restoration period architecture. Guests eager to experience the landmark will be relieved that despite a minimalist style, Hospes took care to ensure that the original moldings, columns, wrought iron, and woodwork remain intact. The lobby's high ceiling and magnificently restored wooden door offer a grand welcome. This gracious sense of hospitality extends throughout the hotel, where a tranquil, opulent ambience is created through white marble and gold details offset by dark fine wood. The Bodyna Spa is ensconced in the former stables, while the Independencia restaurant offers formal dining with an oak-coffered ceiling and stucco work—in contrast to the luminous interior patio, where guests can relax on comfortable sofas and listen to whispering water as they enjoy a drink at the hotel bar.

    Eternal Grace

Located in Madrid’s central Plaza de la Independencia, the Hospes Puerta de Alcalá offers superb views of the Alcalá Gate and the inspiring Retiro Park. The handsome red-brick building with wrought-iron balconies was originally an apartment house for wealthy families, but has been transformed into 41 uniquely decorated guestrooms, among them a grand suite, four grand suite duplexes, and four junior suites. Because of the building’s landmark status as part of the Historic District, the Hospes Design Team carefully complied with structural requirements and ensured that the modernization was in perfect harmony with the existing historic elements. Today, the hotel’s imaginative array of modern additions accentuates the building’s overall longstanding sense of permanent privilege and eternal elegance.

    Spanish Tranquility

Comfortable, Baroque-style furniture and dark sofas that beckon guests to linger over a drink are contrasted by white carpets and silver lamps that make for dramatic focal points. The six rooms on the fourth floor faithfully reflect the establishment’s personality, and are arranged on two levels, with a salon below and a staircase leading up to a bedroom and bathroom.
