      Hotel Miro

Stimulated by the nearby Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts and the Guggenheim Museum, fashion designer Antonio Miró—Spain's answer to Calvin Klein—has turned this 10-story hotel bearing his name into a place of rest with the sober and simple style that has made him a favorite on Barcelona's runways. Markina black marble and pale beige tones are the pleasant backdrop to designer furnishing, while the light-soaked structure also doubles as an inviting showcase space for Hotel Miró's striking in-house contemporary art collection. At Bar Miró, guests can admire work by artists such as famed Spanish photographers Concha Prada and Marc Viaplana. It's a plethora of visual stimulation, but the 50-room hotel's real rewards are cleanly designed rooms with sleek decor. Guests can view the city through wall-sized windows, or simply retreat into their private cocoons by drawing the curtain.

      Carmen Abad Ibáñez de Matauco

In an area known for its artistic attractions, Carmen Abad Ibáñez de Matauco's dignified architectural design holds court with the nearby spectacles of Bilbao's world famous structures. Having such prestigious neighbors, Hotel Miró's new façade simply had to make an architecturally strong statement: atop six white columns, a thin grid of stone frames 25 large windows, creating a light-box effect at night. During the day, meanwhile, the green structure is awash in light, further making its own strong style statement in a city that’s all about architectural firepower.

      Antonio Miró

One look inside Hotel Miró and it’s clear that designer Antonio Miró not only impresses all who enter, but he has impressed himself as well. Selected furnishings include wengé-finished tables by French designer Christophe Delcourt, tripod lamps with woven cotton ribbon-shades by Spain’s Santa & Cole, and, in the bar, leather and thin chrome metal chairs by Italy’s Flexform.
