Literally meaning “south of the river”—in this case, Seoul’s Han River—Gangnam is among the richest districts in Korea with a wealth of department stores and underground shopping centers offering up designer brand stores, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Versace. By contrast, Bonguensa, a Buddhist Temple in the center of Gangnam, showcases Korea’s traditional past. The neighborhood is also home to Samsung and its Samsung D’light, an exhibition space presenting the company’s latest technology. Outdoor activities also abound, including Samneung Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to several tombs, including the burial ground of King Jungjong. Here, too, is Seoul Olympic Park, an expansive enterprise that includes multiple cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, a museum, fitness centers, basketball courts, and inline skating areas—all in a beautiful setting.
