Close to the heart of Johannesburg and Sandton’s business district, this small, suite-only retreat envelops its guests in warmth and tranquillity, whether with its pool and peaceful gardens or through unlocking the wealth of experiences that Africa has to offer. A different designer created each of the ten bespoke suites—which range from ethno-African to contemporary Johannesburg cool—following a brief by proprietor Christoff van Staden to provide natural light and incorporate the lush garden setting. Originally a private dwelling, Ten Bompas has been reimagined as a "home away from home in Africa," combining reassuring calm with adventure, sophistication, and a sense of discovery.

Johannesburg’s Ten Bompas maximizes design diversity in a small, modern suite-only hotel. This peaceful yet lively space for business or pleasure leads onto outdoor patios, garden and pool, belying its location in the heart of Johannesburg’s business district Sandton. Project architect Luc Zeghers and Associates created an overall atmosphere of warmth and tranquillity in public spaces—whereas the suites sparkle in a glorious marriage of ethnic and Edwardian. Built around the basic elements of outdoor access, abundant natural light, and a fireplace, the results run from ethnic high-tech to luxurious Edwardian redux.

    African Rhythms

Each bespoke suite blurs cultures, with features like military-style canvas and splashes of color typical of the South African landscape, while strategically-placed African objets d’art feature throughout the lobby and conference rooms.

    Christoff van Staden

Christoff van Staden attended the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne before returning to South Africa to achieve a postgraduate degree in law. In 1991, Van Staden rekindled his passion for hotels and purchased his first property, Honeyguide Tented Safari Camps. Peter Aucamp worked as an attorney for Werksmans in Johannesburg, and then as an in-house lawyer with the First National Bank, before joining his partner in 1996 to convert Van Staden's family home into the city's first boutique hotel, located in the attractive Johannesburg neighborhood of Sandton. Partners for twenty years, Aucamp and Van Staden are food and wine enthusiasts and enjoy summers at their idyllic home in Lagrasse, France.
