In the circuitous, narrow streets of the picturesque Alfama district in the heart of Lisbon, visitors will find traditional shops, classic restaurants, gently weathered colored houses, and—just steps from the Cathedral and Sao Jorge Castle—the Memmo Alfama. In perfect harmony with the traditional houses that surround it, this cozy and laidback hotel implores its visitors to feel at home, welcoming them not only to borrow a book from the living room library or grab a slice of homemade cake from the 24-hour loyalty fridge, but also to integrate themselves into the district’s vibrant culture. It’s ‘Living Alfama’ program pairs staff suggestions for neighborhood delights with inside tips from locals themselves. And upon your return to the hotel, you can enjoy authentic Portuguese gastronomy and wines as well as the stunning terrace, bar, and pool—the perfect place to take in sweeping views of the city and Tagus River.

Samuel Torres de Carvalho & João Corrêa Nunes

Tucked away on a narrow street, Memmo Alfama is one of Lisbon’s hidden treasures. The hotel blends seamlessly into the surrounding buildings in perfect harmony with the neighborhood’s tradition and history. A mural by the renowned young Portuguese street artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils graces the side of the building, setting the stage for the Memmo Alfama’s earthy and subtle design approach. Madrid-based architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho—who also oversaw the restoration of the hotel’s sister property Memmo Baleeira—led the re-design of this 19th-century structure. The hotel’s crowning architectural highlight is its terrace, which offers panoramic views over the red rooftops of Lisbon.

    Interior Design

    Unpretentious Pleasures

The design team at Memmo Alfama put an emphasis on tactile and long-lasting materials. An abundant use of wood and warm tones creates a soothing, homey ambience that balances the authentic with the contemporary. With their high-quality linens, natural woods, and a rich sandy palette accented by cool grays, each room is a study in simple sophistication. Subtle details round out the experience, from blackout shutters that ensure a restful night’s sleep to intuitive touch lighting.

    Rodrigo Machaz

Rodrigo Machaz is as comfortable with his surfboard tucked under his arm as he is walking the corridors of his two hotels, Memmo Alfama, in Lisbon, or Memmo Baleeira, situated in Sagres on the southernmost tip of Portugal. His hotel staff is family—local ambassadors for the region—and his guests are friends. A born and bred hotelier, Machaz returned to the location of his childhood summer holidays to reinvent the town’s former Hotel da Baleeira, maximizing the foundation’s spectacular sea views and the abundance of natural sunlight. Machaz’s talent for highlighting what is beautiful and distinctive about a place also distinguishes his second venture—Memmo Alfama. Here, Machaz has curated an exceptional blend of local cuisine, design, history, and culture for his guests, from tips on where to hear Fado to the selection of fine Portuguese wines on the hotel’s rooftop bar.
