The two intersecting, perpendicular structures of the Altis Belém Hotel & Spa at once demand attention and blend naturally in the surrounding landscape. Architect João Almeida, of Gabinet Risco, enlivened the main section with “waves of lace”—moveable shutters designed to protect the rooms from the bright sun. The simple composition and linear volume of the two-story structure helps highlight the views from the city to the river.

The interiors are both exotic and minimalistic, with each guestroom featuring an artistic representation of the places Portuguese explorers have traveled, while glass walls and contemporary furnishings soften the tone. Monochromes feature throughout, and communal spaces also see vibrant wall panels depicting scenes from the Orient. The 38º41 Bar and the Cafeteria Mensagem with its Sushi & Oyster Bar all have open-plan inside-outside areas to make the most of this sunny city’s year-round mild climate.
