In the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Pedras Salgadas spa & nature park shows you how innovative sustainable architecture can wrap itself around a centuries old park. Scattered throughout are 13 modular eco-houses, two tree-houses, and one cottage, designed by architect Luis Rebelo de Andrade, that flawlessly blend in with the lush environment, conspicuous only for their pitched roofs. Here, nature is literally a step away, with all eco houses featuring outdoor decks and vast floor-to ceiling windows in unexpected corners. Central to the hotel is a 19th century thermal spa renovated by Alvaro Siza Vieira, who has created an unrivalled space that embraces old and new. Encompassing a pool, hammam, sauna, and Vichy shower, the spa takes full advantage of Pedras Salgadas’ historic mineral springs and their reputed health benefits. One of the most beautiful in Portugal, the ancient romantic park with numerous mountain bike trails facilitates the exploration of this former stomping ground of royalty but now accessible to all.
The 16-room hotel is made up of Eco Houses and Tree Houses that range between 22 and 66 square meters. While the Eco Houses are comprised of two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchenette, a bathroom, a hall, and a deck, the Deluxe Eco Houses also offer space for two extra beds. The Tree Houses, which span around 22 square meters, feature a kitchenette, a duplex bathroom, a double bed, and a sofa.
White-on-white interiors and natural wooden floors complement the verdant forest, which is showcased by large glass windows in many of the guestrooms.
Working around the forest’s trees, lightweight and self-supporting structures hold treehouses aloft while geometric Eco Houses on the ground represent modern, eco-friendly design.
