  • Location

    • Moncarapacho, just northeast of Olhão in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve region, offers slowed-down Portuguese countryside living at its best. Although the town is compact enough to explore on foot, the area around it is well worth an excursion. The region is known for its flowers, as well as orange, fig, and lemon groves that make for beautiful surroundings, and also includes the hills of Cerro de Cabeça and São Miguel. The town itself flaunts the Santo Cristo Chapel, a central cobblestone square and church, a gorgeous pink police station, and a plethora of street-side cafés and restaurants. As the area counts agriculture as one of its main industries, farmers’ markets often bring locals together, especially during the annual carnival celebration. Moncarapacho is also just 20 minutes from Faro Airport; linked by road to much of the rest of the Algarve; close to Ihla da Fuzeta and Barril beaches; and in close proximity to the Quinta de Cima and Quinta da Ria golf courses—yet still relatively undiscovered by the tourist flock.
