ARCHITECTURE

Carlos Ayala

With sustainability and minimal environmental impact at the heart of every decision, architect Carlos Ayala combined reinforced concrete with white and grey stucco surfaces and pine to masterful effect. Aluminum has been used to frame wide glass enclosures that connect interior spaces with the surrounding natural environment. Perforated block perimeter walls allow the air to flow, while rooftops let guests contemplate the surrounding flora and fauna.

As with the structure itself, the furniture at Aurea was crafted with sustainability in mind. Here, the steel and framing materials were fashioned out of leftovers from the construction process. Locally sourced laurel—naturally dried and treated—defines many ceilings and doorways.

Custom-designed colonial tiles also give the walls definition, while bathrooms artfully boast double sinks, rain showers, wide mirrors, and more wood ceilings.
