      About your stay

Many Mainport’s sleek rooms offer facilities usually reserved for hotel spas, such as oversized hot tubs or private Finnish saunas. Regardless of which room guests choose, the informal eighth-floor Spa Heaven will be waiting, complete with its sultry Turkish steam room and rejuvenating hammam complex. Wide glass windows wrap around the waterfront building, allowing guests to see and feel the vibrancy of the inner harbor. Designer Feran Thomassen created the five-star interiors that make subtle nods to far-flung places, without forgetting that Rotterdam is the hotel’s ‘main’ port. In the quayside Down Under restaurant, for example, chefs offer a culinary world tour with a menu that includes everything from Argentinian steaks to Japanese sashimi. Add butler service, 600 sq m of flexible meeting space and a gold sustainability certification from Green Key, and you have a hotel worthy of its location in Europe’s largest port.

      Architecture

      MAS Architects

Water taxis, speedboats and party vessels all stop at Mainport’s private dock, which overlooks Rotterdam’s inner harbor and the city’s jagged skyline, known locally as Manhattan on the Maas. From here, a wave-like pattern on the floor draws passers-by towards the hotel’s waterfront lobby, which – with floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides – feels almost translucent. With visibility as key to the hotel’s central concept, owner Karin Geurts wanted local neighbors to feel as welcome as the guests are. Architecturally Rotterdam is a fairly new city, and so aptly Mainport was purpose-designed by the experts at MAS Architects. The hotel’s step-like façade is a lattice of black panels and wide glass windows, which reflect the calm waters of the inner harbor.

International influences meets traditional Dutch styling

The overall feeling is one of openness and luxury, and the interiors – designed by Feran Thomassen – combine modern international influences with traditional Dutch styling. All 215 rooms have bathrooms clad in marbled tiles and vivid wall coverings that give subtle nods to faraway places. Extras like mirror TVs and whirlpool baths have been cleverly slotted into each room to give them a more spacious feel.

      Karin Geurts

Having graduated from hotel school, Karin Geurts was reluctant to follow in the footsteps of her father Michel, one of the two founders of Inntel Group. However, after several years outside the industry, she felt ready to mix a busy family life with hospitality work, and took up the reins as the new owner of the business. Karin’s philosophy is that hotels should reflect the city they’re in. Because of this, she planned Mainport to reflect Rotterdam’s status as an international hub, with influences from Holland and the rest of the world.
