Unified through the brilliant use of glass, brick, and steel, the six buildings that make up the Kazerne complex create inviting functional spaces that are fluid, open, and largely devoid of visual barriers, such as walls. From the reception area and the roof to the open kitchen and lobby, transparency abounds, thematically echoing the steel-framed glass façade of the warehouse, which itself echoes the neighborhood’s industrial heritage.
Informed by the past and future of design, Kazerne offers three main looks: Industrial, Dutch, and social. In each case, the emphasis is on forming a bridge between art and design, with each work presenting the signature look of its creator, which includes such leading lights as Maarten Baas, Joost van Bleiswijk, and Studio Drift. Here, the rooms present textured surfaces, natural materials, and rich fabrics using a mainly black-and-white color palette.
