Amsterdam Oost, meaning East Amsterdam, is a central borough bordered by the Singelgracht canal, the Amstel river, the Weespertrekvaart canal, and the IJ river, and plays host to a number of attractions, including the Hortus Botanicus, the Hermitage Museum, and the Artis Royal Zoo. The Eastern Docklands also offers a slice of history: The neighborhood was once the base of the Dutch East India Company and is now characterized by cultural attractions and a crimson serpentine bridge known as the Pythonbrug.
