—This 1950's retro-cool hotel shows why Acapulco was once a playground for Hollywood elite, and is fast becoming that again.

      About your stay

Just steps from an idyllic cove, Boca Chica is a grand addition to Acapulco's new era. Located in the district of Caleta, the 36-room hotel was constructed in the late 1950's next to the glamorous Club de Yates and the famed Los Flamingos Hotel. Today, the vintage exterior looks like it's straight out of a mid-century movie set, but inside, the reinvigorated interior has been chicly remodeled by designers Frida Escobedo and José Rojas. Vintage pieces were curated by Mexican contemporary artist Claudia Fernández, and the spacious, tropically-designed rooms come with large hammocks, outdoor living rooms, and private gardens. Guests can venture downstairs to get a massage, chill out with a frozen margarita at the popular in-house disco, hang out on a pool terrace, or order 24-hour sushi room service. Welcome back, Acapulco. You've still got it.

      ARCHITECTURE

      Historical Chic

The Boca Chica, a gem from the infallible Grupo Habita, is perched over an idyllic beach cove in the heart of Acapulo’s vibrant Caleta neighborhood. During Acapulco’s mid-20th century heyday, the Hotel Boca Chica was where all the action happened. This 1950’s architectural jewel, once a sweltering holiday hotspot, took a downturn when the city of Acapulco itself fell out of favor in the 1980’s, after which the building underwent 20 years of neglect. Although these years took their toll, most of the original features and furniture luckily remain intact, which means the hotel is now an architectural—indeed, an anthropological!—treasure.

      INTERIOR DESIGN

      Laidback Luxury

The design team at Boca Chica worked painstakingly to revive the hotel’s prominent atmosphere of tropical luxury from the original structure, but just as intensely to modernize the facilities to suit contemporary standards of comfort: the result is anything but old-fashioned. Such interior features as the marble and granite mosaic floor and lattice ‘celocia’ brickwork were carefully restored.

The décor reflects the time period of the original structure, riding on the wave of 1950’s nostalgia that has lately swept through the worlds of fashion, design, and film. The building was restructured to offer 30 guestrooms and six suites, each with private terraces and hammocks, while earth tones, cool whites, and mild greens reflect the clear blue surrounding waters.

      Carlos Couturier & Moises Micha

For Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha, building hotels that reflect their surroundings is more than just a job—it’s a passion that drove these two Mexican entrepreneurs from citrus farming and investment banking to boutique hospitality. “Even if we’re successful at something, we don’t repeat it,” Couturier says. “We like this sense of passion and audacity.” Their Grupo Habita collection has grown to include very diverse properties. Ambitious, fun-loving and well-traveled, the dynamic duo was awarded ‘Team of the Year 2011’ by FIZZZ Magazine.
