      Tribe Hotel

Urban, loft-like style blends effortlessly with warm African colors at Nairobi's Tribe Hotel, a pioneering lifestyle property that sets itself apart with atypical angles and an unrivalled appreciation for tribal crafts. Some 900 hand-sculpted artifacts from all over Africa have been gathered here, capturing the diversity of the continent and evoking a sense of splendor that is raising the luxury hotel stakes in the continent. Spread across three wings in the heart of Nairobi's diplomatic district, a soaring sunlit atrium links the Tribe's 137 guest rooms and suites. Inside, cool granite and stretches of dark Indian slate temper earthy combinations of cumin, sandstone, and brown-sugar hues. Architect Mehraz Ehsani continues this balance by using authentic Kenyan materials in the public spaces. These include the Kaya Spa, which takes its inspiration from the country's sacred forests; the well-stocked library; the rooftop bar; and the heated pool, surrounded by waterfalls and gardens.

      Under African Skies

From every side of Tribe Hotel you can see the building’s nonconformist angles jutting towards blue skies, with sand-colored blocks and stainless steel columns laid artfully in vertical rows. Closer up, there’s a low-level entrance leading straight inside, where the hotel further separates itself from Kenya’s more traditional luxury hotels. There is also a soaring atrium, which shoots four floors up past curved, comfy armchairs and a series of sand-colored walls that convene at unexpected intervals. Granite, slate, and marble help to temper the warm African tones, and right angles are almost nonexistent. There’s even a granite table submerged in the heated pool, which those on business can use for alfresco meetings.

Working with Les Harbottle of design firm Plan One, Tribe owner and all-around visionary Shamim Ehsani managed to incorporate illuminated pendants and table lamps, throwing layers of light across the public spaces. And at the outdoor pool, wrapped by gardens and waterfalls, diners can eat on floating ‘islands’ warmed by the Kenyan sun.

Carefully crafted gourds, figurines, and artwork from all over Africa stare back from tables, walls, and crannies around the hotel, providing unexpected moments of beauty and giving the hotel a distinctive, African voice.

      Shamim Ehsani

Creating a hotel that both defines a city and represents a nation is a daunting task. But for Nairobi’s Shamim Ehsani and his family it was a challenge they pulled off to masterful effect. Tribe was born in the tailwind of political strife—the riots of 2007 to 2008—and at a time when investment was low. Thus Tribe became the first high-end boutique hotel to have opened in Nairobi in some 30 years. The U.S.-educated Ehsani is the branding man at Tribe, as well as the designer of Tribe’s rooftop lounge, The Nest. His intention was to encapsulate the city’s African spirit while celebrating creativity, fashion, art, and design—and not race, power, or tradition. Four years on, Ehsani and his family have helped strengthen Nairobi as a cosmopolitan destination.
