      About your stay

Directly adjacent to some of Tokyo's most important historic sites, a contemporary creative center emerges. The Gate Hotel stands poised between the cultural heritage of an old city district and luminous modern-day Tokyo. Step out of the elevator and into the thirteenth-floor lobby and you are treated to a gently curving panoramic view of the city below, as well as stunning views of the Tokyo Skytree – the highest freestanding broadcasting tower in the world at 634 meters. Across the street, the Kaminarimon Gate houses sculptures of Shinto deities and a four-meter-tall lantern. Guests can also take in Asakusa's cultural contrasts from the fourteenth-floor terrace, open 24 hours a day, or unwind with a drink in the hotel's sleek, atmospheric restaurant that offers a distinct take on French fusion cuisine. Comfort is key in the Gate Hotel's 137 rooms and suites.

      Architecture

      Maximizing the modern views

The Gate Hotel has established itself as a sanctuary for art and creativity in the newly revitalized Asakusa. Imagine stepping into a room with enormous windows: the Tokyo Skytree extends high above and the historic Asakusa spreads out beneath you. Located almost directly across from the famous Kaminarimon Gate, the Gate Hotel provides a modern gateway to one of Tokyo’s oldest districts. While the neighborhood may be home to some of the city’s most significant heritage sites, the vibe at the Gate is crisp, clean, and contemporary. Shigeru Uchida, one of Japan’s most famous architects, re-designed this former office building and makes clever use of its outstanding location.

A commitment to art in design

The hotel’s design aesthetic combines subdued elegance with accents of bold, urban vitality, which is reflected through the hotel’s commitment to art and design. Each room and suite features a spacious bed, textiles by Marimekko designer Masaru Suzuki, and original artwork.

Paintings by the acclaimed Japanese artist Katsuhiko Hibino hang throughout the Gate Hotel Kaminarimon. Among other works, Hibino created five large, gestural abstract paintings directly in the hotel, influenced by the dynamic interplay between Uchida’s architectural design and the bustling neighborhood that surrounds it.

      Shigeru Uchida

"I'm interested in something beyond the visible or touchable, that is, the existence within the invisible," says Shigeru Uchida, one of Japan's leading designers. Born in Yokohama, Uchida graduated from the Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo and has worked on a wide range of projects, from interior design and furniture, to industrial design, architecture, and urban planning in Japan and abroad. His belief in design as a reconciliatory force between people, society, and nature is reflected in projects such as The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon. Uchida's works are included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Victoria.
